Students Publishing Their Own Work
It is quite rare for undergraduate students to publish papers of any sort as part of their studies for their first degree. However, the trend that was started by the other two engineering departments at Asian University has been continued with two conference papers being accepted for publication, co-authored by students and staff from M.E.D.
The first is from a final year project by Tipayawan Duangmanee, using “Finite Element Methods” to analyse the strength of a ship's hull (figure left shows a FE model of a section of a ship's hull), working in parallel with a consultancy firm that was starting sea worthiness trials of the prototype hull. The project identified problems with an industrial test standard and made recommendations for design changes to increase the strength and reduce the weight of the hull. The second paper is from the experimental work carried out by Apirak Jiewchaloemmit and Janewith Lunagcharoenkij for their 2nd year Engineering Research Methods course. They designed and built a simple test rig to prove a concept from a subject area called “condition monitoring”, which looks at the health of machine components that may suffer from damage or wear. Some of their work including testing our plant equipment in the basement. (Figure left shows the vibration testing of our university plant equipment; click on image to see a larger version).
