  • Mechanical Engineering in the Modern World

Mechanical Engineering is changing as a discipline, but its core or fundamental purpose remains the same, and will do so for sometime making it as relevant and necessary today as it has ever been. At a fundamental level, as long as there is a need for energy conversion and interaction with solids and fluids, there will be a need for Mechanical Engineers.

The key changes come in the growing relationship and eroding of boundaries between the classical engineering disciplines. This means that engineers need to be more aware of related fields, and be able to work on projects related to, for example, bio, nano/micro and communications and/or IT technologies. However, as trends continue to evolve at ever faster rates, the emphasis must be on life-long learning and an ability to retrain and keep up to date. This needs a fundamental basis of critical thinking, problem solving skills, personal maturity and professional skills and outlook.
